May 20, 2017 auction
1962 Jaguar E-Type Series I Roadster (3.8 litre)
Registration VSU473
Chassis Number 877026
Engine Number R4906-9
Estimate £90,000 - £110,000

Originally dispatched from Jaguar Cars on 12th April 1962 to their New York dealer, this E-Type was repatriated to the UK in 1991. The original registered keeper in the UK was responsible for importing the car from Florida and, after carrying out some fairly extensive restoration work and converting her to righthand drive, he enjoyed this Jaguar for some 21 years. The current vendor purchased the car in 2012 and has carried out a significant amount of mechanical work on VSU473, including a full engine rebuild, new clutch and overhauling the brake callipers. Currently in need of some refreshing of the paintwork and trim, although it must be noted that she is in perfectly a useable condition, she is currently MoT'd. Supplied with a Jaguar Heritage Certificate confirming this is a matching numbers example, including the original Moss gearbox, a good history folder with plenty of receipts accompanies this Series I E-type. Recent sales of such examples in comparison indicate this 3.8 roadster to be very attractively estimated.

This Jaguar E-Type has just undergone some major restoration work and, as such, will present in delightful condition. After recent inspection, we are satisfied the quality of work is being carried out to a very high standard. The bodywork has been taken care of, with many hours of craftsmanship ensuring a good panel fit and paint finish. New seals have been fitted around the doors and windows along with new carpets and aluminium dash panels. Mechanically, she was in pretty good shape however a full service has just been carried out with new brakes and shock absorbers fitted. The bumpers together with the brightwork has been re-chromed resulting in this being a very well sorted example and one to enjoy the summer months ahead. She is supplied with a V5C registration document together with a current MoT test certificate and a history folder.

Car returns to auction 9/17

Auction description:
The Salon Privé Sale 2017
1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 Roadster
Lot No.: 244
Registration: VSU 473
Chassis Number: 877026
Engine Number: R4906-9
Number of cylinders: 6
CC: 3800
Year of Manufacture: 1961
RHD/LHD: Right Hand Drive
Estimate (£): 125,000 - 150,000

This particular Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8 Roadster was manufactured on 3rd April 1962 and sold to its first owner in the United States through Jaguar Cars New York. The car was originally supplied in Black with a red leather interior, a colour combination it still enjoys to this day.

The car was imported to the UK from Florida in 1991 by Dr M. Lewis, a surgeon from Cardiff, who set about returning the car to its former glory. In his care, a new/old stock bonnet was sourced, the floors were replaced and any other substandard metal cut out and new panels fitted. The engine was removed and rebuilt at that time with new pistons, piston rings, big ends, small ends, main bearings, a reground crankshaft, and all the oil channels were cleaned and sealed. The interior trim and weather equipment was renewed and the car thoroughly Waxoyled to ensure it would stand the test of time. The car was also converted to right-hand drive by Gimber Motors, a family run business located near Dr Lewis at that time. There is a selection of photographs in the history file showing the amount of work Dr Lewis had carried out.

The car was then acquired by its next owner in 2012, before being purchased by our vendor, who has again set about making this E-Type the best it can be by carrying out further restoration work. A full bare-metal respray in its original colour has been undertaken, with the results being simply stunning. Many hours were spent ensuring the quality of the panel gaps and paint finish were to the highest standard. All bumpers and outer brightwork have been re-chromed, new front shock absorber fitted, new front discs and pads, the interior cleaned and re-dyed where necessary, a new aluminium centre console installed, new rubber seals throughout and a full service including new spark plugs, fluids and filters.

Supplied with a large history file, a Jaguar Heritage Certificate and a UK V5c, thismatching numbers svelte black E-Type is the result of many hours of hard work and is now ready to be enjoyed by a new custodian.
