This 1968 Jaguar XKE is a Series 1.5 2+2 coupe that was dispatched to the United States in July 1968 and underwent a refurbishment between 2011 and 2018 that involved rust repair, overhauls of the suspension and brakes, a repaint in green, and rebuilds of the 4.2-liter inline-six and the three-speed automatic transmission. Features include a reupholstered Cinnamon leather interior, R134a-converted air conditioning, a Bluetooth-capable RetroSound stereo, triple SU carburetors, a louvered hood, knock-off wire wheels, and four-wheel disc brakes with Wilwood front calipers and inboard-mounted rear units. The car was acquired by the selling dealer in early 2023, and subsequent work included overhauls of the cylinder head and carburetors as well as an oil change and replacement of the spark plugs. This XKE is now offered with refurbishment photos and documentation, owner’s manuals, and a Florida title.

Finished from the factory in British Racing Green, the bodywork underwent rust repair during the aforementioned refurbishment prior to a repaint in the current shade of green. Exterior details include a louvered hood, uncovered headlamps, amber side-marker lenses, and dual central exhaust outlets. Various paint chips and an outward dent in the hood are noted by the seller, who also states that the driver’s door is out of alignment at the bottom rear corner.

Dayton 15” wire wheels were installed during the refurbishment, are secured by two-eared knock-off spinners, and are mounted with 205/70 Steel Belted Radial tires. A matching spare is found in the rear storage area. Braking is through four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear units and Wilwood front calipers. The front and rear subframes were removed and powdercoated during the refurbishment, and additional work at that time included replacing the steering rack, tie-rod ends, wheel bearings, and suspension bushings.

The cabin was originally trimmed in Cinnamon upholstery, and its 2+2 layout was reupholstered during the refurbishment. Amenities include an R134a-converted air-conditioning system, a RetroSound AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth connectivity, rocker switches for vehicle functions, a Wilton wool headliner, and lap belts for the front occupants.

A wood-rimmed steering wheel sits ahead of Smiths instrumentation that includes a 6k-rpm tachometer, a 160-mph speedometer, and a suite of auxiliary displays. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 69k miles, and true mileage is unknown. The seller notes that the choke pull does not sit flush to the dash, thereby causing the warning light to stay illuminated.

The 4.2L inline-six was rebuilt during the refurbishment and reportedly bored .030” over. Equipment includes triple SU carburetors, a gold-colored cylinder head, and polished cam covers as well as 9:1-compression pistons, upgraded camshafts, PerTronix ignition, a high-torque starter, and a stainless-steel exhaust system and headers. The engine mounts, electric fuel pump, and wiring harness have been replaced. Work performed in January 2023 by Renaissance Motor Cars of Sarasota, Florida included changing the oil, rebuilding the carburetors, grinding the exhaust valves, and replacing the intake valves, spark plugs, head gasket, and battery.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission that was overhauled during the refurbishment. Rusted sheetmetal in the floors and battery area was cut out and replaced at that time. The seller notes that the car has torsion-bar shields.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
