This Carmen Red 1964 Jaguar XKE Series I coupe was originally distributed to the US via Jaguar Cars of New York and was acquired by the prior owner in California in 1980. It was shipped to the UK for refurbishment between 1984 and 1986, at which time the 3.8-liter inline-six was rebuilt, the interior reupholstered in black leather, and a four-speed synchromesh manual transmission was installed. More recent work in 2021 involved overhauls of the suspension and cylinder head and installation of an aluminum radiator, stainless-steel exhaust system, and a gear-reduction starter along with replacement of the clutch, engine oil seals, and ignition components. This XKE Series I coupe was acquired by the selling dealer from its second owner in 2024 and is now offered with a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, the owner’s manual, service manuals and other literature, service records, a tool kit, spare parts, a car cover, and a clean Pennsylvania title.
The Series I E-Types were equipped with covered headlights and taillights mounted above the chrome rear bumpers. This example came finished from the factory in Carmen Red, and the selling dealer notes that it was repainted to match in 2025 by A&A Auto Body and Repairs of Willow Street, Pennsylvania. Additional equipment includes enclosed headlights, a louvered clamshell hood, wraparound chrome bumpers, bright trim, dual side mirrors, triple windshield wipers, a side-hinged rear hatch, and dual exhaust outlets. The rear hatch chrome should be replaced per the seller, and a chip in the windshield is visible.
The 15″ wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and are mounted with Vredestein Sprint Classics tires that show date codes from 2021. Additional work at that time involved installing GAZ adjustable shocks and replacing the sway bar bushings, ball joints, A-arm bushings, and rear springs. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors.
The cabin was refreshed in the mid-1980s and features bucket seats that were reupholstered in black leather. Replacement carpets were also installed, and interior appointments include black vinyl dash trim, a sliding rearview mirror, a push-button AM/FM radio, and a heater. The left door panel was replaced in 2021, and the seller notes that the headliner is sagging.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are located in the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer has rolled over and shows 21k miles, approximately 75 of which were added by the selling dealer.
The 3.8-liter inline-six features triple SU carburetors and was factory rated at 265 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The engine was rebuilt in England in the 1980s, while more recent work in 2021 consisted of rebuilding the cylinder head with replacement valves and guides and installing a spin-on oil filter, gear-reduction starter, and aluminum radiator. Additional components replaced during the work included:
Cylinder head gasket
Harmonic balancer
Oil pan gaskets and other oil seals
Freeze plugs
Spark plug wires
Distributor
Condenser
Ignition rotor and coil
Cooling fan
Thermostat
The cylinder head stamp reads RA5091-9, and a corresponding number is listed on the engine block, chassis plate, and Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate.
A replacement four-speed synchromesh manual transmission was reportedly sourced from a 1967 XKE and installed in 1984. The clutch, slave cylinder, and transmission mount bushings were replaced along with the transmission gaskets and seals in 2021. The flywheel was also resurfaced, and a stainless-steel exhaust system and replacement front manifold were installed.
Photos from the 1980s refurbishment are included in the sale.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust Production Record Trace certificate shows the original colors and drivetrain numbers as well as the build and dispatch dates.
The car is titled in Pennsylvania using VIN “J64889844,” which incorporates the chassis number along with “J64”.
