This Roadster was the 231st Series I E-Type to be built. According to its accompanying JDHT Certificate, chassis 875231 was completed on July 15, 1961, and dispatched just six days later, finished in Opalescent Bronze paint with a Beige interior and a Fawn top. The car spent its early years with California owners; in 1993, in the care of its second owner, Karl Schurz, this Series I E-Type underwent considerable work, as documented by abundant receipts, photos, and work schedules, which also accompany the car. In 1996, Jordan Harris acquired the Jaguar, and around 2000 he had it fully restored by noted E-Type expert Richard Darnell, at a cost of well over $100,000. Following this comprehensive, photo-documented restoration, the E-Type debuted at the May 2001 JCNA event, where it placed First in the Grand Champion Class with a perfect 100-point score.

In 2002, this Jaguar E-Type was acquired by Bobby Rahal, an International Motorsports Hall of Fame driver who won three Champ Car season championships and many major titles, including the 1986 Indianapolis 500, the 1987 12 Hours of Sebring, and the 1981 24 Hours of Daytona. When he retired from driving, Rahal won the 2004 Indianapolis 500 as a team owner and remained in management at the Jaguar Formula 1 team for many years. After the E-Type spent a few years in his collection, Mr. Rahal relinquished it to a Utah-based collector, but, unable to resist the panache of this iconic Jaguar, he bought the car back in 2006 and retained it for a decade before selling it to the current owner.

This example, chassis number 875231, is one such car. With a build completion date of July 15, 1961, this E-Type has all the commensurate early Series 1 features. Some, like covered headlights, are readily apparent; others, including the exterior bonnet locks (which require a special, factory-supplied “T” key to open), flat cockpit floors, and ventilation louvers welded, rather than stamped, into the bonnet may require a trained eye to spot.

When delivered to its first owner in California, this Jaguar wore a coat of Opalescent Bronze exterior paint with a Beige interior and Fawn top. It is now finished in black with a black interior and black top, a dramatic combination. Beneath the bonnet is its numbers-matching 3.8-litre inline-six engine, as indicated by the JDHT certificate supplied with the car, paired with a four-speed manual “Moss box” transmission.

- dash top seems to be the later / replacement one

- non original colour combination: bronze/beige is so beautiful

- no details about date of wiper motor, right dynamo, etc.

- wrong clutch fluid bottle cap

- windscreen washer bottle cap black instead of originally blue

- repro/reprinted VIN plate

If dynamo and wiper motor were original, the only real downside for me would be, if the original VIN plate did not come with the car.

Chassis number 875231 is bestowed with all the desirable features found in early series production examples. Completing production on 15 July 1961 made this car one of only 385 left-hand drive roadsters to leave the factory with sleek covered headlights and exterior hood latch, along with less readily apparent features such as flat floors in the passenger compartment and louvers that were welded to the hood compared to the later examples where they are stamped directly into the hood.

According to the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, this Roadster was delivered new in gleaming Opalescent Bronze with a complementary Beige interior and Fawn folding soft top.
