    Model: E-Type Series 1
    Type: Roadster
    Year: 1961
    Chassis #: 875231
    Engine #: R1346-9
    Gearbox #: EB802JS
    Body #: R1315
Color: Black exterior with black interior trim convertible top and boot.
Comments: Chassis number 875231 is the 231st Series One E-Type built. The first 300 cars had outside bonnet latches welded hood louvers and a flat floor. These early cars with this unique build quality and the powerful 3.8 liter engine are the most collectible of the E-Types. The last Jaguar designed by Sir William Lyons. The E-Type was such a beautiful design that it was the second car on display in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Condition: Completely restored to the highest level, resulting in a JCNA Award of 100 points in the Grand Champions Class in May of 2001. The restoration consisted of body, paint, chrome, trim, upholstery, electrical, instruments, full mechanical, to include engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, etc. With excellent receipts and photo documentation. Well over $100,000 invested. You cannot duplicate this rare car for the asking price; the restoration costs are too expensive. If you want the absolute best, this is it. Price: $100,000.00

Jaguar Clubs of North America, May 20, 2001 (First in Class)
Jaguar Clubs of North America, October 7, 2001 (Second in Class)

This Roadster was the 231st Series I E-Type to be built. According to its accompanying JDHT Certificate, chassis 875231 was completed on July 15, 1961, and dispatched just six days later, finished in Opalescent Bronze paint with a Beige interior and a Fawn top. The car spent its early years with California owners; in 1993, in the care of its second owner, Karl Schurz, this Series I E-Type underwent considerable work, as documented by abundant receipts, photos, and work schedules, which also accompany the car. In 1996, Jordan Harris acquired the Jaguar, and around 2000 he had it fully restored by noted E-Type expert Richard Darnell, at a cost of well over $100,000. Following this comprehensive, photo-documented restoration, the E-Type debuted at the May 2001 JCNA event, where it placed First in the Grand Champion Class with a perfect 100-point score.

In 2002, this Jaguar E-Type was acquired by Bobby Rahal, an International Motorsports Hall of Fame driver who won three Champ Car season championships and many major titles, including the 1986 Indianapolis 500, the 1987 12 Hours of Sebring, and the 1981 24 Hours of Daytona. When he retired from driving, Rahal won the 2004 Indianapolis 500 as a team owner and remained in management at the Jaguar Formula 1 team for many years. After the E-Type spent a few years in his collection, Mr. Rahal relinquished it to a Utah-based collector, but, unable to resist the panache of this iconic Jaguar, he bought the car back in 2006 and retained it for a decade before selling it to the current owner.

Presenting today in a brilliant triple black color scheme, this early production Series I Jaguar retains its matching-numbers engine per the JDHT and presents in excellent condition with minimal post-restoration miles. This E-Type comes with prodigious documentation, abundant extras (including toolbox, copper mallet, and grease gun), and counts a motor sports legend among its former owners.

    RM | Online Only - OPEN ROADS, NORTH AMERICA 23 - 30 JULY 2020 - Auction Closes on 30 July 2020

    Chassis No. 875231

    Engine No. R 1346-9

    Body No. R 1315

Ultra-collectable early E-Type with external hood latches, welded louvers, and flat floors

One of the original 385 left-hand-drive roadsters with these features

Restored by Jaguar expert Richard Darnell; subsequently earned 100 points in JCNA competition

Numbers-matching engine as confirmed by accompanying JDHT certificate

Twice owned by Indy 500-winning driver Bobby Rahal

    Dramatic triple-black color combination

Please note that this lot will need to be collected from Clarington, ON - Ontario

Please note that this title is in transit.

This example, chassis number 875231, is one such car. With a build completion date of July 15, 1961, this E-Type has all the commensurate early Series 1 features. Some, like covered headlights, are readily apparent; others, including the exterior bonnet locks (which require a special, factory-supplied “T” key to open), flat cockpit floors, and ventilation louvers welded, rather than stamped, into the bonnet may require a trained eye to spot.

When delivered to its first owner in California, this Jaguar wore a coat of Opalescent Bronze exterior paint with a Beige interior and Fawn top. It is now finished in black with a black interior and black top, a dramatic combination. Beneath the bonnet is its numbers-matching 3.8-litre inline-six engine, as indicated by the JDHT certificate supplied with the car, paired with a four-speed manual “Moss box” transmission.

The car received a thorough cosmetic and mechanical restoration by California Jaguar specialist Richard Darnell around 2000, after which it earned a 100-point score in Jaguar Clubs of North America (JCNA) competition in 2001—a testament to the high quality and accuracy of the work performed.

Its provenance is further burnished by its time spent in the collection of famed racing driver Bobby Rahal, whose lengthy list of accomplishments includes three Champ Car championship titles and a win at the 1986 Indianapolis 500. He enjoyed this particular E-Type so much, he actually bought it twice, owning it over two distinct periods.

The car is offered with a tool box, copper mallet and grease gun, JDHT certification, and extensive documentation including maintenance records and photographs of the restoration process. If you are seeking a well-documented early E-Type possessing all the qualities that made the lithe Jaguar an instant success and an enduring favorite, look no further than this exemplary—and nationally recognized—Series 1 3.8-Litre Roadster.

    - stamping head and block seem original

    - wrong steering wheel with repro horn push

    - dash top seems to be the later / replacement one

    - non original colour combination: bronze/beige is so beautiful

    - no details about date of wiper motor, right dynamo, etc.

    - wrong clutch fluid bottle cap

    - windscreen washer bottle cap black instead of originally blue

    - repro/reprinted VIN plate

If dynamo and wiper motor were original, the only real downside for me would be, if the original VIN plate did not come with the car.

All other details are question of pricing

    Car returns to auction 3/24

    Auction description:

    1961 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8 Roadster

    The Amelia Auction 2024 Estimate: $225,000 - $275,000

    Chassis No. 875231

    Engine No. R 1346-9

    Body No. R 1315

Chassis number 875231 is bestowed with all the desirable features found in early series production examples. Completing production on 15 July 1961 made this car one of only 385 left-hand drive roadsters to leave the factory with sleek covered headlights and exterior hood latch, along with less readily apparent features such as flat floors in the passenger compartment and louvers that were welded to the hood compared to the later examples where they are stamped directly into the hood.

According to the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, this Roadster was delivered new in gleaming Opalescent Bronze with a complementary Beige interior and Fawn folding soft top. After decades of enthusiast ownership, the car was thoroughly restored by noted California based Jaguar specialist Richard Darnell in approximately 2000 to its present triple black configuration with matching black paint, leather interior, and soft top. As a testament to the work that went into this Jaguar, the car scored 100 points in the Jaguar Clubs of North America (JCNA) competition in 2001. The lore of this E-Type is further enhanced as it has been included in the collection of celebrated race car driver Bobby Rahal, not once, but on two separate occasions.

Since its showing in 2001, the car has remained in magnificent condition and surely would be a welcome contender at any Jaguar club event. Accompanying the car is a copper mallet, jack, and documentation with photographs during the restoration and maintenance records. When searching for a well-documented Jaguar E-Type with all of the highly desirable early features, this nationally awarded 1961 3.8-liter Roadster combines all of those features into one stunning presentation.
