Car to be at auction 7/11

www.coys.co.uk/auction.php

Auction description:

Lot 132 - 1962 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Litre Series I Roadster

132 - 1962 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Litre Series I Roadster

Estimate: £55,000 - £65,000

Registration Number: 36 NOU

Chassis Number: 850426

This original right hand drive UK car was manufactured in 1962 and is an early example, being only the 426th car produced. In 2010-2011 the car underwent a full bare metal re-spray and is described as being now in very good condition with the bright work described as excellent.

With the original chassis, engine and gearbox this is a fine example of Jaguars iconic E-Type and is supplied with a V5 document, Heritage Certificate, a fresh MoT certificate, invoices and a file of photographs documenting the work carried out, which shows the high standard achieved.

It is apparent that a lot of time has been spent detailing this car, and such attention is evident at first sight, making this desirable version of the timeless E type a stunning example of one of the most desirable cars ever built.

Sold for £65,640.

For sale at Arun Independent and Performance Car Dealers of Pulborough for £139,995. Seller's description below.
www.arunltd.com/vehicle/jaguar-e-type-series-1-38-roadster-in-west-sussex-5f5756 ...

According to the Jaguar Heritage Certificate that is included with the records for this Series 1 Roadster this right hand drive example chassis number 850426 was delivered by Henlys of London on 22 April 1962. The most recent keeper acquired the car in 2012 and it has been kept garaged as part of a collection of interesting cars and used by him for enthusiast meets and sunny days runs. As far as we can determine from the thick pile of documents that accompany the car, the body was restored around 15 years ago to a good standard.

In April 2018 Winspeed carried out works for the most recent keeper that included new inner and outer drive shaft universal joints, brake overhaul including Winspeed non vented callipers, cylinder head overhaul to unleaded specification, electronic ignition in all totalling £14,700. In our opinion, this is an excellent example of the most sought after variant of the iconic E Type Jaguar. The ownership history from the mid 1980's is well documented and the penultimate keeper went to a lot of trouble to trace this history. In our opinion a sound investment.

Seller's description:

According to the Jaguar Heritage Certificate that is included with the records for this Series 1 Roadster, this early right hand drive example (chassis number 850426) was delivered by Henlys of London on 22 April 1962.

The bulk of the extensive service record has been retained and collated by Mr Lees who acquired the car in 2012. In his tenureship it was kept garaged as part of a collection of interesting cars and used by him for enthusiast meets and sunny days runs. As far as we can determine from the thick pile of documents and photographs that accompany the car, the body was restored around 15 years ago and clearly to a very high standard.

More recently in April 2018 Winspeed have carried out a large amount of documented works that have included new inner and outer drive shaft universal joints, brake overhaul including Winspeed non-vented calipers, cylinder head overhaul to unleaded specification and electronic ignition among many other items totaling over £14, 700.

We subsequently purchased the Jaguar from Mr Lees and sold it to the most recent keeper in 2020 and it has been used sparingly since.

In our opinion, this is an excellent example of the most sought after variant of the iconic E Type Jaguar. The ownership history from the mid 1980's is well documented and the penultimate keeper went to a lot of trouble to trace and retain this history. In our opinion a sound investment that is well worth a look....

The valuable registration number 36 NOU is included in the sale....

Very early Series 1 RHD OTS

New bonnet and boot rubbers recently fitted

A detailed restoration in 2011 covering mechanicals, retrim, bodywork and a full respray in Signal Red means that it presents today in very good condition. The quality of the work is evident from the panel fit, paint quality and interior detailing. The engine was rebuilt to fast road spec by Winspeed at a cost of just under £15,000. Since 2018, £28,000 has been expended with the same specialist on general maintenance, servicing and improvements. In 2024 alone, £3,457 was spent with Winspeed on servicing and other work. It is MOT exempt by age but there is a useful test valid to January 2026 to give transparency to buyers. Naturally it is advisory-free.

A vast history file traces the car’s provenance to its earliest days and confirms it is a matching numbers Series 1 car. This is a very high quality early E-Type that would grace any high end collection.

The Condition

Presented in Signal Red over a black interior following 2011 renovation

Paintwork retains a deep shine with only minor age-related blemishes

Bodywork is well kept with very good panel fit as shown

Black fabric roof with matching tonneau in good order

Wide profile chrome wire wheels with matching spare

Matching Pirelli tyres fitted showing good tread

Black leather interior in very good condition following 2011 retrim

Interior retains early E-Type features such as aluminium trim and toggle switches

Fitted with modern upgraded radio as shown

Black bucket seats restored during the 2011 restoration

Aluminium dashboard restored during the 2011 restoration

No structural advisories on current MOT

E-Type experts will instantly spot the quality of this car from the photos. The car was extensively restored in 2011, which covered refurbishing the bodywork and refinishing the car in Signal Red. The interior was also retrimmed, retaining the factory correct black leather finish and the myriad of period details such as aluminium trim, toggle switches and three-spoke wood-rimmed wheel. A quality modern stereo, whose style fits in well, is the only notable variation from the 1960s aesthetics.

The panel fit, paint finish and fittings such as chromework and fabric roof are all in good order. The vendor tells us that there are only minor blemishes, which are not immediately visible in the photos and therefore do not detract from the overall impression.

The Mechanics

Vendor states that the car is a matching number model

3,781cc XK straight six engine

4spd manual ‘Moss’ gearbox

Recent £14,638 engine rebuild and upgrade to fast road specification by Winspeed Upgraded Winspeed brakes

Upgraded stainless steel exhaust system including manifold

The vendor states this E-Type is a joy to drive and sounds fantastic

Engine bay presents very clean

No reported running or driving issues

No advisories on current MOT

Part of the appeal of the earliest E-Types is that they are equipped with the sweet-revving 3.8L version of Jaguar’s XK straight six. Marque specialist Winspeed rebuilt the motor in this car to fast road spec at a cost of just under £15,000 and has covered few miles since. With its 4spd ‘Moss’ gearbox it is reported to be a matching numbers example.

Alongside the upgrade to fast road specification there are improved brakes by Winspeed and a full stainless steel exhaust system.

Since 2018 over £28,000 has been spent on the car through Winspeed, including close to £4,000 in 2024 alone. The car is said to run and drive very well, something that is confirmed by the lengthy voluntary MOT and the very tidy engine bay.
