Lot 163 at Brightwells sale of Classic and Vintage Cars on 2 March 2016. As the accompanying Heritage Certificate confirms, this particular S2 coupe was manufactured in late August 1970 and dispatched to British Leyland New York the following month. Finished in British Racing Green with a Cinnamon interior, it was eventually brought back to the UK in October 1989 at which point it had 62,900 miles on the clock, a total which has now risen to 66,800 miles and is believed to be the genuine mileage covered from new, the original engine being still fitted to the car. It had one Leicester owner between 1989 and 2012 but was mainly kept in storage throughout this period, covering just a couple of hundred miles.

In May 2012 it was acquired by another owner who treated it to a substantial restoration over the next two years at Cotswold Classic Car Restorations of Cirencester. This included a full repaint in the original BRG, new green tinted glass all round, new headlights and taillights, new door sills and window rubbers, new exterior chrome work, an interior re-trim in Suede Green by Skinners of Cirencester with new seat foams, seat belts and carpets, new uprated brake callipers, discs, master cylinder and servo, ITG free flow air filter conversion, SU Carburettors, new 6X15 72 spoke chrome wire wheels with 205/70VR Avon tyres, Evans waterless coolant plus numerous other items.

In February 2014 a new Tremec T5 5 speed gearbox was fitted, almost £3,500 for the parts alone, along with a new clutch kit and many new engine seals and gaskets. Electric power steering was fitted to the steering column, a useful enhancement that makes parking and low speed manoeuvring a doddle. More recently a Kenlowe fan has been fitted along with Petromix electronic ignition with new HT leads and plugs, a new alternator, new clutch master cylinder, lightened and balanced flywheel, new silicone coolant and heater hoses, braided stainless steel brake hoses, halogen headlamps, battery cut off switch, full geometry set up, carbs rebuilt with new needles by Trafford Competition Engines and numerous other improvements.

As you would expect the car is now in very good order throughout and the many thoughtful upgrades mean that this is a thoroughly sorted E Type that drives like a much more modern car and eminently suitable for daily use. Last year it completed an extensive tour of France and the Pyrenees, the vendor reporting that it performed faultlessly throughout. Supplied with a large file of ills documenting the works carried out, an owner's handbook and an MOT until October 2016. It also comes with the original gearbox if desired. Altogether a wonderfully improved and upgraded 'matching numbers' E Type that any enthusiast would love to have. Sold for £58,000.

Sold by the Classic and Sports Car Centre of Malton in November 2016. Seller's description below. The URL is www.classicand sportscar.ltd;uk/Jaguar-E-Type-SeriesII-4.2-FHC/classic-cars-sold/27381

This beautifully presented Jaguar E Type Series II 4.2 FHC was manufactured on 24 August 1970 and left the factory in British Racing Green with manual transmission. The E Type was dispatched on 18 September through Personal Export delivery and distributed by British Leyland New York USA. The E Type was returned to the UK in 1989 and MoT tested in the October with a recorded mileage of 62915 miles. From 1989 to 2012 the E Type was dry stored and not used and in 2012 a two year programme of restoration was undertaken and today the E Type presents in exceptional condition with some lovely, desirable upgrades enhancing the driving of the car.

In 2012 a Gloucestershire based restoration company stripped the E Type bodywork and carried out a complete re-paint in British Racing Green. They contracted the interior work to a local specialist and a full trim was carried out in Sage Green. New wheels and tyres were fitted, chrome work was replaced and various new trims and rubbers supplied and fitted. In 2014 mechanical upgrades included a new T5, 5 speed gearbox, new electronic power steering, a lightened and balanced flywheel and all new silicone coolant and heater hoses. General mechanical and electrical work included a full brake system overhaul with new callipers, new servo, master cylinder, stainless steel braided hoses and new pads front and rear. The clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder were replaced, the heater fan unit overhauled, a new electronic distributor fitted, new HT leads, new radiator, new thermostat fan switch, H4 halogen bulbs, new alternator and carburettors rebuilt. On completion the E Type successfully completed a tour of France and the Pyrenees and has now covered over 3000 miles since restoration. Invoices for thousands of pounds worth of expenditure are with the vehicle history file.

SUX987H has an excellent body shell with superb straight panels and a high quality, deep paint finish. The underside of the car is excellent, the car is structurally outstanding and the car has fine detail with excellent door shuts, engine bay and spare wheel well. Chrome work is all stunning and gleaming, including the chrome wire wheels and the recently re-trimmed upholstery has been beautifully done to the highest of standards. The engine holds excellent oil pressure and is a strong unit offering excellent performance, the new five speed gearbox is fabulous to use and with power steering, overhauled brakes and a superb suspension, the car is first class to drive. This is an E Type that has already proven to be reliable and ideal for long distance, continental touring and is perfectly placed for this type of usage with the advantage of the five speed gearbox and power steering. This is a truly superb example that can fulfil many purposes whether it be long distance touring, local shows, events or just a beautiful collector's piece that can be enjoyed in good weather.
