RM Auctions description:
Specifications:
265bhp, 4,235 cc overhead valve twin-cam inline six-cylinder engine, four-speed manual synchromesh gearbox, four-wheel independent suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 96"

An instant sensation upon its introduction at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, the E-Type was conceived by Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons and aeronautical engineer Malcolm Sayer. With its classic design and styling, it is widely considered one of the finest sports cars ever built. The Series II E-Type benefited from mechanical advantages over its Series I predecessor. These include a new cross-flow radiator with twin electric fans for better engine cooling, bigger Girling brakes, an improved clutch, camshafts with redesigned profiles resulting in smoother engine performance, and added creature comforts including adjustable reclining seats. As such, the 1970 Series II carries the E-Type cumulative improvements, with the low-maintenance operation inherent in Jaguar’s powerful straight-six, twin overhead cam engine – a definite advantage over 1971’s more complicated twelve-cylindered Series III.

The well-documented, matching numbers Jaguar Series II E-Type Coupe presented here was purchased new in 1970 by the Whiting family, friends of the current owner. The Heritage Certificate is included along with a copy of the original dealer invoice indicating the original price of $6,832, with the indication that such price excluded the “Front Grille Guard paid for separately – $32.00”. The car remained in the same careful ownership for 25 years, at which time the current owner, a Jaguar enthusiast who won the JCNA National Championship with another Series II in 1996, acquired it. With minimal sorting, the car was entered into JCNA “Driven Class” competition, where it scored 9.983 out of 10, and a Best in Class award at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Auto Fair in 1996.

The superb original mileage coupe was subsequently submitted to a complete restoration. All grading scores and historic documentation are included. As a two-owner car, the original accessories usually lost to history have survived, including the complete tool kit and jack (restored to pristine condition), owner’s manual and pouch, sales brochures, and the original factory “Passport to Service” voucher book filled out to Mr. Whiting. A very close inspection confirms attention to detail in all respects, including the perfectly operating air conditioning and five new factory-correct Dunlop tires. Not only a beautifully restored example, the owner reports that the Series II E-Type Coupe is a joy to drive.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
