Sellers deacription:

1R27601 was originally purchased from the C.H. Hornburg Jaguar dealership in Los Angeles on 3/13/1970 by the parents of the lady from whom I purchased the car. The car was acquired simultaneously with two other new E-Types by her father and it passed into her official ownership in 1971. She moved to Longmont, Colorado in February 2006 where I bought it from her on September 6, 2006. Based on her description as well as dates and addresses on the extensive service history I have reasonably determined the car’s location over the past 39 years as the following:

· 1970 - 1981 Los Angeles and vicinity;

· 1981 - 1999 Palo Alto/Mountain View California;

· 1999 - 2/2006 Carmel and Monterrey California;

· 2/2006 - 9/2006 Longmont CO.;

§ Ownership Change

· 9/2006 – 4/2009 Boulder CO.

It has been continuously registered from new with the same California registration and plate through July 2007 in her name, and with Colorado classic registration from October 2006 in my name. It has been driven continuously and never been off the road with the exception of moderate periods for extensive maintenance (engine rebuild -1 month) and paint and upholstery restoration (1984 and 2008 – several months each).

SERVICE HISTORY

1R27601 is accompanied by an extensive service history. While there are a few gaps, the history is quite complete, from delivery in March 1970 to September 2006, and totally complete from then to the present. Extensive maintenance and rebuild was performed on most of the cars mechanical systems over the 39 years.

MILEAGE

The indicated mileage reading at this writing is 81632. This is definitely incorrect. From the service history it is known with certainty that by June 30, 1976, the car had already been driven 66,366 miles, or about 11,000 a year. The next receipt with mileage indicated was January 2, 1980 with 71420, where it remained through many receipts until 5/5/1988 when the speedometer was repaired. It is unknown when it stopped, but the original owner told me that she had driven it about 9 or 10 years with a broken odometer. Given the 11000 annual usage rate, it probably broke in the beginning of 1977 or the end of 76 indicating 71420 miles. From 5/5/88 (71420 miles) to the present 81632 miles the car was only driven a little over 10000 miles over a period of about 20 years, or about 500 miles a year average. Assuming annual mileage somewhere between 500 and 11000 over the approximately 10 to 11 broken speedometer years, a guess of 6000 annual average would do for those years, then that would add about 66k. Therefore, an educated guess would be 81631+ approximately 66000 or something in the vicinity of 150,000 miles. This car was continuously driven.

ENGINE & CLUTCH

1R27601 is a numbers matching car, with one minor exception. The cylinder head was replaced in 1985, and the number on it does not match the engine block. The rest of the numbers, serial, engine, transmission and body match. The engine and clutch were completely overhauled ($5328 in 1985 dollars or $10,266 in 2008 dollars) by the Ferrari/Jaguar authorized service center in Palo Alto (Manarello). It is likely that it has covered between 30k to 40k since, and it runs beautifully. It passed strict Colorado emissions (without any fiddling with it) on the first try in October 2006. The oil pressure is excellent (50+ lbs hot), it is smooth, quiet and about as leak free as is possible for an E-Type (occasional drop). The clutch master and slave cylinders were replaced in 2008.

COOLING SYSTEM

The radiator was re-cored in 1999. New water pump installed in 1997. The factory fans were replaced in 2008 with Cool Cat totally compatible fans that provide a 60% increase in air flow. Another Cool Cat upgrade for the otter switch was installed. The unit is comprised of a housing that fits into the original otter switch mount on the radiator and in turn accepts reliable standardized fan switches common to most Japanese cars (they work before the car gets too hot!). Don’t worry, I’ve kept the old fans and otter switch for masochists out there.

GAS TANK & FUEL SYSTEM

The gas tank, all fuel lines, fuel gauge an electric fuel pump all function as they should. The original zenith Stromberg Carburetors were rebuilt in the 1980s and then again in September 2006.

CHARGING SYSTEM

The alternator was rebuilt in the fall off 2008, and the voltage regulator was replaced in March 2009. The system charges flawlessly.

TRANSMISSION & DRIVE TRAIN

The original fully synchronized Jaguar 4 speed transmission is in place and shifts flawlessly. The drive train functions as it should.

SUSPENSION & STEERING

The steering unit was rebuilt and the upper and lower ball joints ere replaced in 1985, about 30-40K miles ago. They seem to be fine.

BRAKES

The brakes work as they should, there are no leaks and the pads are visually in tolerance.

A/C

The “factory” (actually dealer installed) Delanair air conditioning system is fully installed and electronically functions, engaging the compressor and fan. The fan is noisy and at times appears to be touching something. To It wasn’t working when I bought the car since the previous owner had it electronically disconnected around 1998 because it caused the car to overheat. When I bought the car however, only one of the factory fans was working and the previous owner disconnected the A/C prior to re-coring the radiator. It is now all as it originally was again except that the Lucas A/C relay has been replaced with a solid state Bosch (I kept the original Lucas), although it will need a vacuum test check for leaks and charging when we get a warm day here. I’m hoping that the Cool Cat upgrades and re-cored radiator should resolve any problems that might have existed. Since I have had it, the car has never run above normal temperature even on the 100 + days in Boulder with only one fan. In the end, however, there is no guarantee that it will work. (although the A/C fan blows a lot of air!)

BODY

The body is one of the high points of 1R27601. The original owner claimed that it had never been crashed. In 1984 it was stripped (all glass removed) and color changed from the original Sable (beige) to Jaguar specification British Racing Green (at a cost of $4710 1984 dollars equivalent to $9401 2008 dollars). When painted again (BRG) in 2007 it was stripped again with all glass removed revealing only glaze used during the 1984 restoration and aside from minor dings, the car didn’t appear to have been crashed. The front of the bonnet top and bottom is essentially free of bodywork. The complete interior was also removed at that time and revealed no evidence of damage. The only rust evident on the car was in the floor pans. The driver’s side was minor marginal in one spot and had been repaired with a plastic compound. It was not rusted along the margins or the seams, and rather than destroy the still good OEM fit, I chose to leave it as it was. The passenger side was worse and had begun to perforate and encroach on the seam. It was replaced with a new floor pan. The car comes with the additional floor pan if anew owner chooses to replace the driver side. With regard to rust, there does not appear to be any other rust. The condition of the body is evidence of the car’s dry California and Colorado history. The car is driven, therefore it does have some minor chips and scratches.

GLASS

The glass is all light green tinted and in excellent condition. The OEM Pilkington Triplex windshield, made in England is new, installed in 2008 after the repaint.

SEATS & INTERIOR

The original specification biscuit interior has been completely restored. Much of the interior was custom fitted using the original patterns by MASTERCRAFT of Arvada CO. who also installed the carpets, seats, headliner and console from OEM kits.

WHEELS & TIRES

Two of the wire chrome wire wheels are new (NIB), two are indistinguishable from new (obtained locally from a Jaguar Specialist. The tires are (4) NEW correct size Coker Red Lines. The car is equipped with 4 new Series I 2 eared knock off spinners. (The federal knock offs and octagon tool are included for masochists). The spare shines and although it is missing a couple of spokes it works fine.

CHROME

During the time the car was in Monterrey from 1999 to 2006, the original owner told me she lived near the beach and kept the car under the highest quality car cover available ($350.00). An adverse result was that the cover kept some moisture between it in the car causing surface rust to appear on the chrome. Consequently all of the chrome was removed and either replaced or re-chromed in late 2007. The re-chrome bill alone was in excess of $3000.

ELECTRICS

Well it’s Lucas………… and most of the harness is original, so things have been fixed as they broke (usually switches). The tachometer was rebuilt by Nisonger in the summer of 2008. All of the instruments work (including the clock!...thanks to Mr. Clock’s modern quartz clock invisible in the original Smiths housing. Five of the six Lucas relays have been replaced with solid state Bosch relays supplied by Cool Cat (consequently stuff works- and yes I have the old ones).

RADIO

The radio is a retro style Custom Autosound Mfg. Concours USA-6. Its controls are knobs and it even has a realistic pseudo-dial. It looks 50s- 60s except that it has 240 W and is output equipped for 4 speakers and/or external amplifier. It also has auxiliary input sfor an MP3 or IPOD with the cable conveniently hidden and for a remote cd changer that can be controlled from the radio. The car does not have a CD changer. The radio operates a fully disappearing power antenna in the rear with the on-off knob. It powers two high end infinity triaxial speakers that almost have stock appearance. All is new, installed in January 2009. The car did not come with an original radio, but a cheap aftermarket cassette player which was discarded

SUMMARY

* The car has clear Colorado title.

* All receipts are included in the sale

* This is a nearly 40 year old vehicle still with many original parts.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
