Car was at auction in '08

    Auction description:
    Lot number 47
    Hammer value N/S
    Description Jaguar E-Type S2 FHC
    Registration SJA 26H
    Year 1970
    Colour Carmen Red
    Engine size 4,200 cc
    Chassis No. IR26206

Supplied new to America in 1970, this Series 2 E-Type was imported back to the UK in April 1990 and professionally converted to right hand-drive. In the current ownership since 2001, the car has covered around 10,000 miles in the last ten years. About two years ago the car was driven to Munich and back to attend a family gathering and is said to have "never missed a beat".

There are said to be lots of bills from 1996 onwards showing regular maintenance, including a full engine rebuild with unleaded head at Frenchay Garage less than 8,000 miles ago at a cost of £3,600. Other significant bills cover floor pan repairs and sill replacements at Classic Restorations of Burnham-on-Sea, and an overhaul of the rear brakes and the handbrake in December 2007.

The vendor rates the paintwork as 'fair' the panel fit as 'good' and the chromework and 72-spoke wire wheels as 'excellent'. While the seats are said to be 'very good' the rest of the interior is rated as 'fair'. An official Jaguar E-Type works service manual is included in the sale, as are a fair quantity of spares including a modified Mk10 4.2 triple carb head complete with a specially designed inlet manifold to allow it to fit under the bonnet of the E Type; clocks; bumpers; brake servo/master cylinder etc. With an MOT until December 2008 and taxed until September, this car can be enjoyed as it is and gradually improved over time.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
