Auction description:
Sale 19280 - RAF Museum, Hendon,Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia, 11 Apr 2011
Hendon, RAF Museum
Lot No: 312
1969 Jaguar E-Type 4.2-Litre Series 2 Coupé
Registration no. UAP 710H
Chassis no. 1R20313
Engine no. 7R34049
Estimate: £25,000 - 30,000, € 29,000 - 35,000
This E-Type Series 2 coupé was acquired by the immediately preceding owner, Mr Graham Brown, in November 1986, joining his private collection of classic cars. The recorded mileage at that time was a believed genuine 66,080. Not long after acquisition the E-Type was despatched to Southern Classics, then in Chertsey, for complete restoration, which was finished in January 1988 at a cost of over £18,000. Work carried out included extensive body repairs, panel replacement and rust proofing; repaint in Jaguar Indigo Blue; full re-trim in blue leather/Hardura to correct specification; and a mechanical overhaul wherever necessary. The engine had been rebuilt at 65,000 miles and was not touched. A change in the owner's personal circumstances (starting a family) meant that there was little time to enjoy the E-Type, which remained in heated storage together with the rest of the collection, occasionally started and taken out, until he retired in 2007. At that time it was decided to put the car back on the road and Southern Classics were entrusted with its extensive re-commissioning, which ended up costing a further £16,000. The odometer reading at that time was 66,683 miles, only 603 more than when the E-Type was purchased in 1986!
In September 2008 the current vendor acquired the E-Type from Mr Brown. While in the vendor's possession the car has benefited from further refurbishment and various improvements costing over £6,000. These included a new windscreen wiper motor, clutch master cylinder, high-torque starter motor, original-style door mirrors, power-assisted steering, remote central locking, immobiliser, retro-style radio (with iPod connector), inertia-reel seat belts, smaller steering wheel, and Coolmat sound/fire insulation. In addition, the body cavities have been Waxolyed and neoprene front suspension bushes fitted. Since September 2008 routine servicing has been carried out by experienced Jaguar expert, Roy Martin, the last full service being undertaken in October 2010 when new rubber seals were fitted around both doors. Always garaged and never driven in rain or snow, the E-Type has been used for several trouble-free runs and is only offered for sale because of the owner's ill health. The odometer currently reads 67,878 miles.
Described as in generally excellent condition, this restored yet little used E-Type coupé is offered with sundry restoration invoices, insurance valuation certificate, MoT/tax to September 2011 and Swansea V5. The original steering wheel comes with the car.
