eBay/Kruse auction, Sanata Clara, CA 10/27/2001, lot #163. Sports Car Market report reads:

AM/FM cassette. Wood steering wheel, trunk rack. Red Line tires almost bald and falling victim to dry rot. Very clean underhood, fair paint, good chrome and interior. A two-owner survivor, not a freshly restored car.

Spectrum auction Palm Springs CA 4/1/2001 lot #230. Sports Car Market report:

Refinished with speed and economy as evident priorities, sloppy weatherstrip appication and some ripples in the doors seen.

Car was at Russo and Steele auction:

    Auction description:
    1970 Jaguar XKE Series II
    VIN: 1R14090

Mechanically sound and a pleasure to drive, this roadster is fitted in the classic old English white livery with accenting black interior. A recent cosmetic detail includes new, period correct whitewall tires, weather striping and exhaust components. Now more than ever, with eligibility in many vintage rally events, this is the time to own this icon of English sports car motoring. And this is the car. Well sorted and equally well presented, this series II "Open Two Seater" is an outstanding example of the marque.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
