The classic Jaguar E-Type needs no introduction. Wickedly fast, sleek, seductively beautiful in design and engineering: it is widely acknowledged as the standard by which other sports cars are judged. They credit their ancestry to the convergence of Jaguar's successful 1950's D-Type racing programs, and then the wonderful XK120, XK140, and XK150's models. When one wants to refer to the racing heritage of the car, it is an E-Type; or when relating it to the famous XK's, it is an XKE. The terms are interchangeable, and both are proper.
The E-Type evolved through three generations during the course of it's production from 1961 to 1975. Termed the Series I, II, and III, each variation had it's own strengths, and weaknesses. The E-Type is a beast, and keeping one will test your patience. However, the rewards are tremendous to include consistent "thumbs-up" gestures. Like most beautiful things, they require attention, investment, and TLC. E-Types are now considered to be a unique art form, and one sits on permanent display in the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
These distinctive cars represent not only the power to go, but also a unique tube-type frame, independent rear suspension, distinctive transmission, and inboard braking system, all of which provides excellent handling. It can run at 150 MPH, control the curves, and then power out into the straight sections of road with a characteristic, and splendid roar.
This car is a Series I, which was produced between 1961, and 1967. The Series I is acknowledged as being the simplest, purest, and most desirable of the three designs. It is immediately identified by it's glass covered headlights, small front air intake cowling, triple windshield wipers, and slim marker lights, and bumpers. It has a 4.2 liter engine which holds 12 quarts of 50 weight oil, and produces in the range of 265 British, or 300 American brake horsepower. This car is, in comparison to the E-Type Roadsters, and Coupes, an uncommon long wheel based 2+2 model, which as a larger car, made it a Grand Touring model. This particular car was likely imported into Canada, and was located, and painstaking restored after it had sat in a garage for 22-years. It is a rare, beautiful, roadworthy, driver and keeper !!
In 1970, and with the introduction of the National Highway Safety Act, and emission requirements, things changed: and not for E-type improvement. The resulting Series II, and III's have larger motors, air intakes, larger repositioned marker lights, and bumpers. However, they are acknowledged to lack the traditional fluid grace of the Series I cars. None-the-less, to each their own, and they also more than adequately represent the most beautiful sports car ever built.

Additional description text from latest auction:
Restoration:
I bought the car from an engineer who had stored it for 22 years. The motor was trashed and it needed a paint job. Otherwise the car is pretty much original with the exception of re-chrome work, some new parts here and there, new radiator, U-joints, electronic ignition, battery, fuel pump, sent the speedometer to XKs Unlimited in CA to be rebuilt, etcetera. The engine work was done by Bob Wanta of Milford, CT in 1997. Bob is an engineer who restores old Jags. The speedometer did not work had had something like 7,000 miles on it. Bob estimated that there were likely 25K to 30K miles on it. And also went over the entire car while it was apart in terms of the transmission, rear end, suspension, etcetera. He felt that it had never been apart and was all original.
Frame:
Frame showed no evidence of having been bent or wrecked, nor is it rusted. Solid
Suspension:
The suspension is original and it rides great. Starts, runs and goes down the road well! This is a driver and it likes to move on.
Brakes:
Bob feels they are ok as they work fine. Also it passed CT inspection. We did replace the slave cylinder that had a leak.
Body:
Body Number is 4E50403. During the repainting job, the body guy (now deceased) advised that he did find some filler. He took it down to the metal, but nothing serious. There was no evidence of body rust. Where the rocker panels on the E-Type curve under the car on each side, there has been a metal plate attached. Likely rusted rocker panels. We left them in place and painted over them. All body parts match up fine and have even gaps.
Paint:
Painted in 1997. It is in excellent condition. There are several coats of primer though the paint and clear coats. The paint is not lacquer but rather acrylic. It is deep and very eye catching. This is NOT a 20 footer. It stays as beautiful as you see it at 20 feet as it does when up close inspection is performed.
Chrome:
Re-chromed all major parts plus a number of engine parts to avoid the polishing task. The major chrome parts are in excellent condition. All other smaller chrome are original. It is aged but is in good condition.
Interior:
Excellent ... no damage ... soft leather that smells like new gloves ... all gauges work ... toggle switches ... everything works ... headliner is original and as with the small chrome parts is "aged" ... however, it is not damaged and I have left it as is.
Transmission:
The transmission is original. Transmission Number is EJ7864. I don't have the rear-end number, but Bob said that it had never been out. We replaced some u-joints while it was apart. Otherwise it was ok. 3.54:1 ratio. The transmission is tight and really fun to drive.
Engine:
Engine Number is 7E50346-9. The engine is original. Entire rebuilding effort to blue print specs in 1997. There are no leaks. It runs like it should. It does not burn oil or smoke. Carbs are set perfectly. Everything is in order, just turn the key and go. This is a classic example of what the 4.2 Jag engine should look, run, sound, and move like.
Exhaust:
Excellent. I installed the V-12 muffler and exhaust tips to produce a wonderful roar, sounding great!
I use her as a driver. However, there is a medallion on the dash board for a show winner in I believe 1972 in New York. No hidden surprises. This is something like the 10th Jag I have owned, and by far she has been the best and most dependable. I have no reservations in taking her out and she has never broken down. I am selling the E-Type simply due to my having picked up since 1997 a Jeep, VMax, Kuboda tractor, Dodge Ram Hemi, two trailers etcetera and I have too many toys. We use the Jeep, Max and Ram all of the time and the Jag sits there. I need the room and I don't need to back my tractor into the side of the E-Type so, it goes. If I had the room I would simply sit it aside as an investment, however, I don't have the room to store it. If I were to keep it, there is nothing that it needs other than Sunoco 94 which is what it prefers.
